Bill Stewart resigns as WVa head coach
Dana Holgorsen was expected to be introduced as the West Virginia head football coach next season. He was hired as head coach-in
-waiting and offensive coordinator in December. As of Friday night, he was the current head coach at West Virginia after Bill Stewart resigned.
Athletic director Oliver Luck didn’t address specific reasons for Stewart’s resignation at a news conference. But Luck said recent developments had become an issue.
Both Holgorsen and Stewart made headlines in recent weeks for the wrong reasons.
Holgorsen was escorted out of a casino last month for being intoxicated. Stewart had approached a reporter shortly after Holgorsen’s hiring to “dig up” dirt on his eventual successor.
Stewart went 28-12 in three seasons but failed to earn a Bowl Championship Series berth.
Stewart was named interim coach after Rich Rodriguez’s sudden departure for Michigan after the 2007 regular season ended. He led the Mountaineers to a win in the Fiesta Bowl over Oklahoma and was named head coach in the early morning hours after the game.
Stewart, who turns 59 on Saturday, will not remain at WVU in any capacity. He never received annual contract extensions given to Rodriguez by former athletic director Ed Pastilong, who retired last year and was replaced by Luck.
