Helio Castroneves Wins His Third Indy 500 (Video)
Just over 30 days after being acquitted of six counts of tax evasion, Helio Castroneves was back on top of the world on Sunday.
He drove his Penske Racing car to his 3rd Indy 500 victory Sunday in the 93rd edition of the race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
It was the 15th Indy 500 victory as a car owner for Roger Penske. All three of Castroneves’ victories have come driving for Penske.
Dan Wheldon, 2005 Indy 500 winner, was second, 1.9 seconds behind Castroneves at the checkered flag. Danica Patrick had a career best day at the Brickyard in third.
After sipping the milk traditional of the race winner in victory lane at Indianapolis, Castroneves broke down emotionally while still in his car.
“My tears speak for everything,” Castroneves said. “What a great team. . . . I’m here today because of those guys.”
Castroneves is the ninth driver to win the Indy 500 three times. A.J. Foyt, Rick Mears and Al Unser are the only four time winners of the event. Castroneves joins Louis Meyer, Mauri Rose, Johnny Rutherford, Wilbur Shaw and Bobby Unser as three time winners. He is the first foreign born driver in the group.
Castroneves won in his first appearance in the race in 2001 and made it two consecutives victories a year later.
