Here are today’s MLB free picks

UNDER 8 Florida Marlins vs. San Francisco Giants:

Good pitching matchup tonight by the Bay as Sean West (3-2, 4.06) takes on All Star Matt Cain (9-2, 2.48). Should be a low scoring affair tonight in this battle of two teams in the thick of the playoff picture in the National League.

Rookie West has been a pleasant surprise for Florida since his callup, and the Marlins are right there in the hunt for the NL East title. He’s done a nice job and should be a fixture in the rotation for years to come.

Matt Cain has been as good as he’s ever been in his career in 2009, and is headed to the All Star game next week in St. Louis. His last few efforts have been terrific, as he’s allowed only 8 runs in his last 31 innings pitched. He’s struck out 29 in that time as well.

UNDER 8.5 Baltimore Orioles vs. Seattle Mariners:

Another good pitching matchup in Seattle tonight with Orioles rookie Brad Bergesen (5-2, 3.53) taking on Mariners lefty Jarrod Washburn (4-6, 3.36). Should be a good one as this three game series gets underway in the Pacific Northwest.

Bergesen has been a major bright spot in another losing season in Baltimore. Not much was expected of him beyond a possible 5th starter position, but he’s become the O’s “ace” before they start bringing up some highly touted prospects. He’s 3-0 in his last 5 starts, allowing just 8 runs and 24 hits in his last 37 innings pitched.

Washburn has done a great job for the Mariners this year, and is keeping them right in the thick of the AL West race, only 3.5 games out. He’s only allowed 13 runs in his last 32 innings pitched, but is only 1-2 in those efforts. His run support has been awful, but he is keeping the Mariners in games by pitching into the 6th inning in almost every start.

Expect a low scoring game tonight in Seattle between a young team hoping to become a foce in years to come, and a surprise contender in the AL West.
