UNDER 9 Seattle Mariners vs. Los Angeles Angels:

Great pitching matchup this afternoon at Safeco as Scott Kazmir makes his Angels debut. Kazmir was a huge acquisition for the Angels, as they’ll need the lefty to step up big in the playoffs against the likes of New York and Boston. He’ll oppose Felix Hernadez and the M’s today. Hernandez is having a terrific season, and the M’s surprisingly have been in contention most of the season, although they’re hanging by a thread right now.

Kazmir (8-7, 5.92) took a while to get going in 2009, but seems to be back to his reliable self now as we hit the pennant race. He’s pitched 21 innings in his last 3 starts and allowed just 7 runs, while striking out 21. He’ll look to avenge a loss to the Mariners that he suffered on August 9 while still a member of the Rays.

Hernnadez (13-5, 2.77) would probably be considered a front runner for the Cy Young Award if the Mariners could score some runs for him. He’s been brilliant all year and looks lke he’ll be the ace of the Mariners staff for years to come. He is 1-1 with a 2.73 ERA in his last 5 starts.
