Must See Sports TV: July 10 – 12
Welcome back to another football-less weekend. We’re a few weeks away from training camp, the NBA turns to Summer League and baseball finishes up before the All-Star Break. But the entire weekend is highlighted by one of the biggest fights in the history of UFC.
On Friday, we open with the Tour de France, Stage 7. Can Lance Armstrong move up from second place or will he fall back racing from Barcelona to Arcalis? Versus is televising the Tour on Friday from 8amET.
The PGA Tour stops off at Silvis, Illinois for the John Deere Classic. No Tiger and no Phil, but you do get Lee Janzen and Matt Bettencourt. The second round is televised on The Golf Channel starting at 1pmET.
The U.S. Women’s Golf Open Championship stops off at Bethlehem, Pa. All sorts of controversy as commissioner Carolyn Bivens is reportedly being forced out by the players. They’ve lost so many sponsors and tournaments we’ve lost count. The economy hasn’t helped, but poor leadership is a major reason. The second round is televised on ESPN2. .
On Saturday, the entire day of viewing leads up to one historic fight at night.
The third round of the John Deere Classic continues on Saturday on CBS at 3pmET.
The U.S. Women’s Open Championship will have their third round broadcast on NBC at 3pmET.
Baseball is back on Fox at 4pmET with regional coverage with the NY Yankees at the Los Angeles Angels or St. Louis at the Chicago Cubs. The Chicago White Sox take on Minnesota in a big AL Central matchup at 7pmET on WGN.
You have a Major League Soccer matchup on ESPN at 8pmET between Columbus and Chicago in Illinois.
At 8pmET, NASCAR Sprint Cup fans can catch the LifeLock 400 on TNT. The site is at Joliet, Illinois (big weekend for Chicago) and last year’s champ was Kyle Busch.
The biggest event of the weekend takes place at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. Two championships will be on the line when UFC heavyweight title holder Brock Lesnar defends his crown against rival Frank Mir in their long-awaited grudge match, and UFC welterweight champion Georges “Rush” St-Pierre puts his belt up for grabs against Brazilian knockout artist Thiago “Pitbull” Alves. Also, The Ultimate Fighter coaches collide as Dan Henderson takes on Michael “The Count” Bisping in a pivotal middleweight showdown. The fights are on PPV, with the first televised bout beginning at 10pmET. Lesnar, the former WWE wrestler, is a -250 favorite to get revenge on Mir.
On Sunday, the Tour de France moves to Stage 9 and from Saint-Gaudens to Tarbes. It’s televised on Versus beginning at 7amET.
Golf continues on NBC with the final round of the U.S. Women’s Open Championship at 3pmET and the final round of the John Deere Classic at 3pmET on CBS.
The All-Star Features Game, highlighted by the stars of the Minor Leagues, will be broadcast at ESPN2 at 2pmET.
Baseball returns to WGN, but this time it’s the Chicago Cubs hosting St. Louis at 1pmET in Game 1 of a doubleheader. The Milwaukee Brewers host the LA Dodgers on TBS at 2pm. The final game before the All-Star Game on Tuesday features the Cubs and St. Louis again in Game 2 of a doubleheader on ESPN at 8pmET.
