Offseason Analysis:

The New York Giants got rid of Plaxico Burress, their best playmaker two years ago, so what does a good organization do? They say they have what they need on their roster, but instead go out and draft a big receiver in Hakeem Nicks in the first round from North Carolina and an even bigger one in the third round (Ramses Barden). Nicks has great hands and good speed, but was drafted low because of a poor combine where he gained weight and had a hamstring pull. Barden is Buress in body six (6-6, 229), has huge hands (10 3/4 inches) and 37-inch arms.

In the second round, the Giants selected big Clint Sintim (6-3, 256), an outside linebacker in a 3-4, who can play end in a pass-rush situation. They took a left tackle in the second round in William Beatty, who can play either tackle spot and will eventually wind up as a starter.

In their other third-round pick, they grabbed TE Travis Beckum, a solid pass-catching tight end and former defensive end and outside linebacker. They got a steal in the fourth round when they selected Andre Brown, a big back from NC State, who could be the replacement for Derrick Ward.

In the fifth, they grabbed Rhett Bomar, a former Oklahoma QB, who was suspended and ended up at Sam Houston State. He’ll be a project but has a lot of talent to work with. In the sixth and seventh rounds, they grabbed two corners. DeAndre Right is a burner with toughness and two injured shoulders. He’s raw and unpolished so the Giants can at least stash him on the practice squad or IR for a year or two. Stoney Woodson from South Carolina, has solid speed and could contribute on special teams.

As for free agents, the Giants didn’t make a lot of major moves, but they did identify some holes and tried to plug them. They brought in Rocky Bernard and Chris Canty to help out at defensive tackle. They are just part of a very strong rotation. At linebacker, Michael Boley from Atlanta, adds athleticism to the corps at the weakside. The Giants look to be in very good shape.
