The Kansas City Chiefs travel to Baltimore to play the Ravens on Sunday September 13 at 1:00 P.M. (EST) in week one of the 2009 NFL regular season. The current line has the Ravens favored by 8.5 points and the over/under is set at 37.5. The last time these two teams met was back in 2006 with the Ravens winning 20-10 on the road. Baltimore gets the chance to host this one where they are 5-1 in their last six home openers.

Kansas City has a new coaching staff as they said goodbye to Herm Edwards after a dismal 2-14 record in 2008. Looking for a no nonsense coach with an aggressive style, the Chiefs hired Arizona Cardinal Offensive Coordinator, Todd Haley to try and lead them back to prominence. They also pulled off one of the biggest trades this winter, acquiring QB Matt Cassell from New England. Cassell is expected to help ignite an offense that averaged only 18 points per game and 308 yards of total offense last season. Without the supporting cast that he had in New England, it remains to be seen how effective he will be.

Baltimore on the other hand has most of the pieces in place from last year’s team that was only one win away from playing in the Super Bowl. Rookie QB Joe Flacco played with the poise of a seasoned veteran and appears to have what it takes to become a big time player in this league. The normally defense driven Ravens averaged over 24 points a game and 324 yards of total offense in 2008, providing balance to the entire team.

What does this all mean for this game? Most likely more of the same for both teams, with Baltimore continuing their winning ways in home openers and Kansas City trying to find a way to put points on the board. This one could get out of hand early as the Ravens will try to put on an opening day show for their fans.
