Offseason Analysis:
The San Francisco 49ers took advantage of the Raiders need for speed by taking Michael Crabtree, the draft’s best receiver. Crabtree is coming off a stress fracture in his left foot and that’s the only concern, but he should be 100 percent for training camp. In the third round, they chose RB Glen Coffee, a powerful runner who runs like Frank Gore and should be able to complement him.
They took a very productive linebacker in Scott McKillop from Pitt in the fifth round. He’ll provide depth at linebacker and special teams. In their other fifth round selection, they took a quarterback-Nate Davis from Ball State. Davis apparently has a learning disability, which pushed his stock down, but that doesn’t affect his comprehension of the playbook.
They added a blocking tight end in Bear Pascoe from Fresno State in the sixth round. In the seventh, they took two players from LSU in S Curtis Taylor and DL Ricky Jean-Francois. In free agency, the 49ers added very little of significance. On offense, they grabbed receiver Brandon Jones, who could end up being their third wideout. He adds good speed, but the team still lacks a strong deep threat. On the O-line, Marvel Smith adds experience at right tackle and can play the left side as well. The problem with Smith is that he’s missed 15 games the last 2 seasons due to back problems.
On defense, the Niners added veteran corner Dre’ Bly, who is certainly on the downside of his career. Defensive end Demetric Evans is an undersized, blue-collar type of player, who will add depth and experience.
